Support Request: Toolbar buttons are very very small

Description

Hello, we are using a Surface 3 that is Windows 8.1 (Not the Surface Pro, but the *new* Surface 3). I have tried changing the screen resolution to everything up until 1024x768 and still every time the toolbar buttons are way too small in SiteKiosk, any way to make the toolbar bigger? Even the keyboard is so small, we can't change the size of the toolbar and fonts? I can hardly read the tool bar text.

Thanks

Hello,

Generally the size of the skins & onscreen keyboards (selectable at -->Start Page & Browser) depends on the screen resolution configured on Windows.

But you may have used the Windows feature to change the size if text and other items at “-->Control Panel-->Display”.
That setting is user dependent and you may first check it in “Run once” mode under the user account you changed the display setting.

To change that Windows setting in the SiteKiosk user account (used for the “Auto Start” mode) please find here the description about how getting access:

Hello, I disagree with you, something is definitely wrong with SiteKiosk version. We have purchased over 20 licenses so far and we have not had this problem until this week. We have an out of the box Surface 3 and an Acer Iconia W700, again, I tested this with out of the box from the factory and also after applying all the Windows Updates. In BOTH PCs with Windows 8.1 when I run SiteKiosk, the browser toolbars are small, very hard to read but then also something happens about 10 seconds in, the toolbars shrink immediately to the point you can't read them.

And a second symptom occurs, when I click on Start SiteKiosk, then I click on CUSTOMIZED button, then I click on button to the right of login automatically as this user, the pop up to select the user comes up and then 3 seconds into it, the back window gets very very very small font and controls to the point I can't even read the text, let alone be able to select the buttons almost, the user window remains with the same font/control size.

I have no way to attach an image in this reply to show you the above so I am attaching a link to the image so you can click on the link and see the image.

This is a bug unless you tell me how to solve it. I have tried every browser selection in your software and all behave the same, after a few seconds, the toolbars shrink, in fact, when I reduced the screen resolution to different sizes all the way down to 1024x768 for example, SiteKiosk browser never changed the size of the toolbar, it dynamically kept the same size as when the resolution was 1920x1280 which is contrary to what you initially responded to. And I will agree with you, in previous versions the resolution would help increase the control sizes in SiteKiosk, not with the new version, something is wrong. Two different brand new PCs (out of the box) and same problem with the same SiteKiosk version.

Thank You

Hello,

In regards to the screen resolution there hasn’t changed anything in SiteKiosk 8.x and SiteKiosk even has no influence to the screen resolution or display settings on Windows.

The second screen shot shows that you have used the Windows Display settings “Change the size of all items”.

You should reset this setting back to 100 % (Smaller).

Then choose “Adjust resolution and set the screen resolution lower (e.g. to 1024x768).

Finally check the SiteKiosk configuration and verify that the “Browser Toolbar” setting for the “Default Skin” you use (in the screenshot) is set to “Launch SiteKiosk with large browser bar (Default)”
“-->Start Page & Browser-->Default Skin-->Customize-->Browser Toolbar-->Launch SiteKiosk with large browser bar (Default)”.

Then test it in “Run once” mode first.

If there is anything different in Auto Start mode check the Windows Display settings within the SiteKiosk user account and make sure it is set back to 100%.

Ok, here is the issue:

You state:

>>The second screen shot shows that you have used the Windows Display settings “Change the size of all items”.

I replied stating that we have not changed *anything* in the Windows Display Settings, this is from FACTORY settings. So can you assure me that we have changed the settings. I am telling you that something has changed in Windows 8.1 that is going to cause trouble with your software. Once again, we did not change anything in the display settings. Second, when I go to the display settings and select "Make text and other ... larger", this NEW version of windows 8.1 does *not* have the option to select the 100% smaller, or medium or larger like older windows 8.x version had. Now Microsoft is only allowing you to select SMALLER and LARGE, Large is the default from the factory. If I select Smaller, SiteKiosk gets even smaller in the toolbar.

Third point, I already have in sitekiosk browser the setting to launch with Large Browser bar.

Auto Start mode and One time launch makes no difference. There is something really wrong, I am trying to convey to you that you have a possible bug that no one has reported yet in relation to the latest windows machines apparently. The effect is that the toolbar starts small to begin with (even in 1024x768), then if you wait 10 seconds, the toolbar gets very very small that you can't see the text anymore and the icons are tiny. Virtual keyboard does not change the size no matter what resolution we select.

SiteKiosk works fine in Windows 8 or an older version of Windows 8.1, we just installed in another Acer W700 where we did not allow it to run windows updates and the same EXACT SiteKiosk version works fine.

If you are not able to help us, we will need to start using another Kiosk software immediately.

Thank You

Hello,

I also have tested it on an (older) Acer W700 with Windows 8.1 and all updates installed.
But even it would be caused by any Windows update I cannot immediately declare this as bug because a bug must be reproducible on several (clean) Windows systems (with all updates installed) using the most current SiteKiosk version.

I am aware that the default setting is not “Smaller” on that tablet device but you should set it to “Smaller” as otherwise you get the effects like described mixed (smaller and bigger) text in certain dialogs or skins.
This is because certain text / design components will be configured by CSS Style sheets.
That is not a bug but a dedicated behavior.
Otherwise the style sheets can be changed by customizing the corresponding files.

The thing that is not reproducible is that the text and skin size doesn’t change when lowering the screen resolution at the Windows 8.1 settings (provided the text design on Windows is set to “Smaller”).
In my tests this always worked (on an Acer W700 device with all current Windows 8.1 updates installed) and as it seems it even works on your second W700 device.

You may first copy the SiteKiosk configuration from the working W700 device to the other W700 that doesn’t work.

In case that doesn’t help compare all Windows settings of the 2 devices and also check which additional programs are installed.

Last but not least the “Default Skin” you did choose is an older Skin not designed for higher resolutions.
But you can (and maybe should) also choose another / newer Skin designed to be used on Tablet devices with higher resolutions – e.g. the “Metro IE Skin”.
