Support Request: Google Maps Crashes

Description

Whenever I navigate to the Google Maps site, the page begins to load and then freezes and SiteKiosk restarts.

I have tried this is both the Restricted User Account and in the Administrator Accounts in both the Start Once and Auto Start Modes and get the same result in all modes. I have 4 PC's running the Site Kiosk Software and all of them are showing the same error.

I can access the Google Maps website outside of the SiteKiosk Shell no problems in both the restricted and administrator user.

So I have done the following:

1. Set the System Security to Unprotected
2. Logged in as the Restricted User
3. Can Access the website through IE OUTSIDE of SiteKiosk
4. Launch SiteKiosk in both Auto and Once Only mode and Google Maps freezes and SiteKiosk crashes.

Please help as my client is very unhappy and needs this resolved.

Andrew

If the page freezes when you access it, you may try adjusting the watchdog settings:

SiteKiosk is required to report back to the Software Watchdog (watchdog.exe) after certain (adjustable) intervals (30 seconds by default).
( SiteKiosk configuration -->Maintenance-->Monitoring-->Settings).

If SiteKiosk fails to report back within the set interval, the Software Watchdog restarts either the SiteKiosk browser.
This ensures that there is little to no downtime of the application.

If you see this entry only on occasion, you should not worry about it too much.
If you operate terminals that are in constant use 24/7, it is not unusual for this entry to occur every once in a while, as, for instance, users sometimes open an HTML page that contains errors.

You may try increasing the Software watchdog time setting.

1. Open the configuration file
2. Scroll down to the ‘Maintenance’ section
3. In the ‘Maintenance’ section, locate the ‘Monitoring' section and click the ”Settings” button
4. Locate the Crash Detection settings (“If SiteKiosk does not respond…” and “If a window is black (or disabled) for…”) and increase the time (in seconds). The default is 30 seconds.
5. Save and run the SiteKiosk software.

Hi Grant,

Thanks for the reply.

I did try the suggestion you made as I saw it on the forums as a possible fix. This unfortunately didn't work even when I increased both of the values to 90sec from the default 30sec.

As I mentioned, it does start to load, I can see the map appear and then, with what looks like a single file to load as part of the page, it freezes and then SiteKiosk shuts down and restarts.

Please let me know what else can be done as I have explained earlier, using the restricted user account with Internet Explorer outside of the SiteKiosk Shell, works perfectly.

Thanks again,

A

- Do you have the most current version of SiteKiosk installed on your computer.
- Are you able to replicate the issue on more than one machines?

I have tested this on a Windows 7 and Windows 8 machine with SiteKiosk 8.91.3042 installed and was not able to replicate the issue... I am able to navigate to www.googlemaps.com and access the direction feature and navigate the map.

SiteKiosk is free to evaluate and can be downloaded from: http://www.sitekiosk.com/en-US/Downloads/Download.aspx?ItemId=1

I have upgraded all 4 machines to the latest version and the issue still exists. I am running on Windows 8 and as mentioned the issue is the same across all machines when trying to access Google Maps.

Please advise ASAP as others are having this issue also and there still doesn't seem to be a result.

UPDATE:

Turns out it was the on screen keyboard that for some reason was stopping Google Maps loading properly. When I removed the On-Screen Keyboard the issue was fixed.

To ensure I could still use the keyboard however I did the following:

1. Enabled the On Screen Keyboard
2. Checked the Floating Keyboard Option in Advanced Settings
3. Un-Checked the Automatically appear when needed check box

This seemed to fix it for me !
